Compliance Training. Make Compliance Training More Interesting?
How do you make your compliance training more interesting so that employees engage and learn what the Regulations demand?
It’s a common challenge amongst the L&D and compliance training communities. Many employees, and unfortunately many managers regard compliance training or ”Required Learning” as something that simply has to be endured and got through so that they ‘can get on with their proper job’.
We have heard some horror stories about what actually happens to this critical material. We have heard about employees who start the e-learning module and watch TV/answer emails/make coffee whilst it runs and then randomly click answers until they finally get the required pass mark. A surefire way to successful knowledge retention? We think not. We have heard about employees collaborating so that they can share the right answers and ‘pass first time.’ And probably the worst example I can think of was an Executive Director who admitted he had his PA complete all his Required Learning modules on his behalf!
This mind-set and behaviours are unhelpful and hardly conducive to learning or indeed achieving genuine compliance – but it is the unfortunate reality that many firms face. Just how do you make the compliance training material interesting and are you in fact flogging a dead horse?
Somebody once said to me that you can polish a turd but no matter how hard you try, the best you are going to get is a shiny turd! Lets face facts. The material is dull and most people will always view it as such. Making it look good doesn’t change the fact that the material is deemed uninteresting and dry by most recipients. That is not to say it isn’t important, it is hugely important to the individual employee and the employer. Assisting compliance training – we think not.
We would suggest that you are asking the wrong question and the objective is flawed. You are never going to make this subject interesting to the majority of employees. They are on balance always likely to view this material as uninteresting. Recognise this, use it to your advantage and change the paradigm.
Make Compliance Training Interesting?
Instead of trying to make the compliance training material interesting, ask yourself the question, how do I guarantee that employees learn, understand and maintain this (boring and uninteresting but hugely important) material?
Now this is easy and it is readily achievable if you understand how the brain actually learns and obey some “Golden Rules” when dealing with dry material and/or disengaged workforces.
The brain learns most effectively using repetition, spaced learning and self-testing. In fact, if you follow this approach and adhere to the Golden Rules then we guarantee that these employees will learn, understand and retain what you and your Regulator needs them to.
We at Elephants don’t forget are home to Clever Nelly who guarantees (full money back guarantee if it doesn’t work) that we can solve this problem for you and do so in a away that employees will prefer and will have no negative impact on employee productivity/availability for work. In other words takes no time at all. Too good to be true? Not at all, we have 2 new Regulated clients joining us every week to help them address this very challenge.
